Norfolk, MA has grown up around a particular kind of house: the large colonial or farmhouse-style home on an acre or more, built in the last twenty or thirty years in the subdivisions off Route 115, around Mirror Lake, and out along Seekonk Street and Union Street. These houses have a lot of roof — a long main ridge, a two- or three-gable front, a garage wing with its own peaks, a farmer's porch, maybe a bump-out over the family room. They're built to be lit. They also tend to sit on lots where the trees are still young and the landscape is mostly foundation plantings and lawn, which means the house itself has to carry the display.

Hynes Landscaping lights Norfolk homes the way these houses deserve: every roofline and gable traced in custom-cut commercial-grade LED so the architecture reads clearly from the street, entries and porches dressed with wreaths and garland, foundation plantings glowing at the base, and the young trees that will one day anchor the yard wrapped so they count now. Most of our Norfolk clients want warm white and a tasteful, consistent look — which also keeps everyone square with HOA guidelines in the neighborhoods that have them. We install in November, maintain all season, and take down and store in January. Call 781-356-3311 to reserve your date.

Multi-Gable Rooflines, Porches, and Garage Wings

The modern Norfolk colonial has more linear feet of roof edge than almost any other house type we light, and most of it is visible from the road. Done right, a continuous warm-white C9 run along every eave and up every gable turns the house into a crisp line drawing after dark. Done casually — one strand across the front, nothing on the garage, the gables left dark — it looks unfinished. We measure the house and custom-cut each run to the exact length of the edge it follows, so lines meet cleanly at the peaks, corners are tight, and the garage wing, the porch roof, and the bump-outs are all part of the same drawing.

Farmer's porches get wrapped columns and garland along the rail. Big front entries get a lit wreath sized to the door, often with a matching pair on the garage doors so that long façade stays balanced. Dormers and roof returns are traced individually. On homes with a cupola or a weathervane, we'll light that too — it's usually the highest point on the property and the first thing you see coming down the road.

Everything attaches with clips matched to your gutter and shingle profile. No staples, no screws into trim, no adhesive on the siding. On newer homes with composite trim and seamless gutters, that matters: the house looks exactly the same in February as it did in October.

Foundation Plantings, Young Trees, and HOA-Friendly Design

Norfolk yards are still growing in. The oaks and maples planted when the house was built are often fifteen or twenty feet tall, and the landscape is mostly foundation shrubs, a few ornamentals, and a lot of lawn. We work with that. Foundation plantings get net-lit or wrapped so the base of the house glows and the roofline isn't floating in the dark. Young trees get wrapped on the trunk and main limbs — a well-wrapped twenty-foot maple is a real feature, and each year as it grows the wrap grows with it. Lamp posts, mailbox posts, and the stone walls or split-rail fence along the drive get lit so the display extends to the property edge.

A lot of Norfolk's neighborhoods are HOA-governed or informally expect a consistent look, and almost all of our residential work here is warm white: a single color temperature across roofline, trees, and plantings so the house reads as elegant rather than busy. If your neighborhood has written guidelines on lighting color, timers, or dates, we'll follow them, and we're happy to design something that fits the street while still standing out for its quality. If you want more color — multicolor on the trees, red and white on a porch — we'll do that cleanly too.

Timers are set for dusk-on and a shutoff time of your choosing, which keeps the display within any neighborhood quiet-hours expectation and means you never touch a switch. For families with young kids in the newer Norfolk neighborhoods, we can also add a lit path along the front walk so the approach to the door is bright and safe on dark December evenings.

From November Install to January Takedown and Storage

Our holiday lighting is a season-long service. Installs are scheduled through November, with the earliest dates reserved first; a typical Norfolk colonial is a one-day job for a crew. Once installed, the lights are our responsibility until they come down: if a run fails, a timer resets after a power outage, or a clip lets go in a storm, you call and we fix it at no extra charge. In January we take the display down, coil and label each run by its position on the house, and store it at our facility so next year's reinstall is quick and identical — or updated with whatever you'd like to add.

All crews are fully insured. On a big Norfolk roof with a 30-foot gable peak, that's not a detail — it's the reason to have someone else do it.

Why Hynes in Norfolk

Hynes Landscaping has served Norfolk and the surrounding towns for more than 25 years, and we know the modern colonials here intimately — the gutter profiles, the gable heights, the composite trim that shouldn't be touched by a staple. Our holiday lighting uses the same commercial-grade LED we install on commercial properties across the region, custom-cut to your rooflines and rated for Massachusetts winters, attached with the right clip for the surface. Because we're a full landscape company, our crews already know how to work carefully around your plantings, walkways, and irrigation heads in the cold. You get one point of contact for design, install, in-season service, takedown, and storage. Learn more on our Residential Holiday Lighting page, or call 781-356-3311 to get on the schedule.

Get Your Norfolk Home on the November Schedule

A big Norfolk colonial with every gable traced, the porch dressed, and the young maples glowing is a sight the whole street enjoys — and it should not involve you on a ladder at the gable peak. Hynes Landscaping designs it, installs it in custom-cut commercial LED, keeps it lit all season, and takes it down and stores it in January. Call 781-356-3311 to reserve your install date before November fills.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

  • That's exactly what we do. Every eave, gable, porch roof, dormer, and garage line is measured and gets its own custom-cut run, so the whole house is traced consistently and lines meet cleanly at every peak. Partial lighting is what makes big colonials look unfinished; complete tracing is what makes them look sharp.

  • Yes. Most Norfolk HOA guidelines favor warm white, consistent color, and reasonable timer hours, which is our default residential design anyway. Send us the guidelines or tell us what the neighborhood expects and we'll design within them.

  • Yes. A fifteen- to twenty-foot young tree wrapped tightly on the trunk and main limbs is a real feature and ties the house to the yard. As the tree grows, we extend the wrap each year, so the display matures with the landscape.

  • Installs run through November, booked in the order reserved; we try to have homes lit before Thanksgiving when the schedule allows. Takedown is in January, after which we label and store your lights for next season. Mid-season service calls are included.
