Nearly every one of those calls traces back to the same missed step: the system wasn't properly winterized the previous fall.

If you own an in-ground sprinkler system anywhere on the South Shore — or anywhere in Massachusetts, for that matter — the fall blowout isn't optional maintenance. It's the single most important service visit of your irrigation year. This guide explains why winterization matters so much in our climate, when to schedule it, exactly what a professional visit should include, and what to expect when the system wakes back up in spring.


Why Blowouts Matter in Massachusetts

Frost Goes Deeper Than Your Pipes

Here's the uncomfortable math of a New England winter. In a typical Massachusetts cold season, frost works its way down through the soil — and in a long stretch of hard cold, it can reach several feet deep in unprotected ground. Residential irrigation lines, meanwhile, are usually buried 8 to 12 inches down. That's well within the frost zone.

Water expands roughly 9 percent when it freezes, and it does so with enormous force — enough to split PVC and polyethylene pipe, crack brass fittings, and burst valve bodies. Any water left sitting in your lines, valves, or heads in December is a liability by January. The damage happens silently, underground, and you won't discover it until startup in April or May.

The Backflow Preventer Is the Most Expensive Victim

If one component fails from freezing, it's usually the backflow preventer — the brass assembly, often mounted above ground near your foundation, that keeps irrigation water from siphoning back into your home's drinking water supply. It's required by plumbing code, it's the most exposed part of the system, and its internal check valves are precisely machined parts that do not tolerate ice.

A cracked backflow preventer typically means several hundred dollars or more in parts and labor to replace — and in Massachusetts, backflow work must be handled by a licensed professional. Compare that to the cost of a routine blowout visit, and winterization becomes one of the easiest financial decisions a homeowner makes all year.

"I Drained It Myself" Usually Isn't Enough

Some systems have manual or automatic drain valves, and plenty of handy homeowners shut off the supply and open a few drains each fall. That helps, but it rarely gets everything. Irrigation lines don't run perfectly downhill to a drain point — they follow the contours of your yard, and low spots hold trapped water no gravity drain will ever reach. The only way to reliably empty a zone is to push compressed air through it until the heads run dry. That's the "blowout," and it's why professionals show up with a tow-behind compressor rather than a wrench.


When to Winterize on the South Shore

The scheduling window in our area is generous but firm: late September through mid-November, with most South Shore systems best shut down in October.

A few rules of thumb:

  • Don't shut down too early. Your lawn and plantings still benefit from irrigation through the warm days of September, especially newly seeded turf and fall plantings. Late September is early enough for almost everyone.
  • Don't gamble past mid-November. The first hard freeze on the South Shore often arrives in November, and an exposed backflow preventer can be damaged in a single cold night — well before the ground itself freezes. If a deep early cold snap is in the forecast and your blowout isn't done, wrap the backflow in insulation as a stopgap and get on a schedule.
  • Book earlier than you think. Every irrigation contractor in Massachusetts compresses hundreds of blowouts into about six weeks. Homeowners who call in early September pick their date; homeowners who call in early November take what's left.
  • Coastal doesn't mean safe. Towns near the water — Scituate, Marshfield, Duxbury — run slightly milder than inland towns like Brockton or Bridgewater, but "slightly milder" is meaningless to a brass check valve at 24 degrees.

What a Professional Winterization Visit Includes

A proper blowout is quick — usually 30 to 60 minutes for a typical residential system — but there's a sequence to it. Here's what should happen when the crew arrives:

  • Shut down the water supply. The irrigation feed is turned off at the main shutoff, typically in your basement or utility area, isolating the system from household plumbing.
  • Drain the accessible components. Drain ports on the backflow preventer and main line are opened to release standing water from the supply side.
  • Connect the compressor. A commercial-grade compressor is connected downstream of the backflow preventer — never blowing air through the backflow itself at high pressure, which can damage those same internal checks the process is meant to protect.
  • Blow out every zone, one at a time. Each zone is activated from the controller and run until the heads sputter and blow dry air. A careful technician watches every zone actually run rather than assuming, because a stuck valve or dead solenoid discovered in October is far better than one discovered in May.
  • Leave the backflow valves in the correct winter position. The ball valves on the backflow assembly should be left partially open at a 45-degree angle so no water can be trapped against a closed valve seat.
  • Set the controller. The timer is switched to "off" or "rain mode" — keeping the programming intact so spring startup doesn't mean reprogramming from scratch — and smart controllers are set to suspend watering.
  • Flag any problems. A good crew notes broken heads, leaking valves, or coverage issues spotted during the blowout, so repairs can be planned rather than discovered in-season.

If your winterization visit is a truck in the driveway for ten minutes and no one runs the zones individually, you didn't get a blowout — you got a drive-by.


A Quick Homeowner Checklist Before the Crew Arrives

You don't need to do much, but a little preparation makes the visit smoother:

  • Know where your irrigation shutoff valve is (basement, crawlspace, or utility room) and make sure it's accessible.
  • Make sure the controller is reachable — garage door unlocked or access arranged.
  • Mention any zones that behaved oddly during the season: weak pressure, heads that don't pop, soggy spots.
  • If you have a well or a pump-fed system, tell the scheduler in advance — pump systems have extra steps.

What About Smart Controllers and Rain Sensors?

More South Shore systems every year run on smart controllers — Rachio, Hunter Hydrawise, Rain Bird's app-connected models — and homeowners sometimes assume the technology changes the winterization equation. It doesn't. A smart controller is very good at deciding *when* to water; it has no ability to remove water from buried lines. The blowout is exactly as necessary as it was with a 1990s dial timer.

What smart hardware does change is the shutdown details. The controller should be put in its standby or off mode through the app rather than unplugged, so it keeps its schedules, Wi-Fi settings, and watering history for spring. Wireless rain sensors and flow meters should be left in place — they're weatherproof — but it's worth confirming their batteries in fall so the system wakes up fully functional in April.


A Preview of Spring Start-Up

Winterization is half of a matched pair. When the danger of hard frost has passed — typically mid-April to early May on the South Shore — the system gets recommissioned, and a proper spring start-up mirrors the fall shutdown:

  • The backflow preventer valves are returned to the open position and the supply is turned back on slowly, so a surge of pressure doesn't hammer the lines.
  • Every zone is run and inspected head by head — checking rotation, spray patterns, and coverage.
  • Broken or clogged heads, torn seals, and nozzles knocked askew by plows or snow are repaired or replaced.
  • The controller is reprogrammed for spring watering — and adjusted through the season, because a lawn's needs in May are very different from July.
  • Any town-required backflow testing gets coordinated, since many Massachusetts municipalities require an annual certified test.

Homeowners who winterize properly almost always have quick, boring spring start-ups. That's the goal. The expensive, dramatic springs belong to the systems that went into winter wet.

An in-ground irrigation system is a genuine asset — it keeps your lawn and plantings healthy through dry Massachusetts summers and protects everything you've invested in your landscape. But it's a seasonal asset in a four-season climate, and it needs to be put to bed correctly every fall.
